The Spanish government has decided not to declassify documents from the National Intelligence Center (CNI) related to the 2017 Barcelona and Cambrils attacks, at least for now.
This decision comes as a commission of inquiry begins in the Congress of Deputies, featuring testimonies from former CNI director Félix Sanz Roldán.
The commission, established to uncover the truth behind the attacks, requested the declassification of these documents, a move that only the Council of Ministers can authorize.
The Ministry of Defense has reiterated that CNI activities are classified as secret, limiting the scope of the inquiry.
The investigation aims to clarify the CNI's interactions with Abdelbaki Es Satty, the alleged mastermind of the attacks, who died in an explosion prior to the attacks.
Despite judicial conclusions, some independent groups suspect state involvement, fueling conspiracy theories.
The government maintains its commitment to transparency but cites technical issues as a barrier to immediate document release.
